Poet, essayist and rock climber Brian Laidlaw will read briefly from his new book Erratica: On Climbing, Language, and Touching Stone, and then lead a craft talk on what he calls ‘the poetics of scale.’ Inspired by fractals in nature – the idea of self-similarity across scale, the way a cliff’s geometry is the same as that of a boulder, a pebble, and a grain of sand – Brian will lead a generative workshop (all genres welcome – prose, poetry, song, other) that encourages participants to write through both the micro-lens and macro-lens of attention, leading to images and insights that echo one another across scale, from the infinitesimal to the infinite.

Brian Laidlaw is an author and songwriter based in Moab, Utah. He writes for magazines like Outside, Alpinist, Climbing, and Orion, and his debut nonfiction book Erratica: On Climbing, Language, and Touching Stone was released this fall by Milkweed Editions.
